Don’t Forget How You Got Here

Numbers 33:2 ESV

“Moses wrote down their starting places, stage by stage, by command of the LORD.”

We’re back in the book of Numbers, and I’ll be honest: Numbers 33 is the kind of chapter where you can start reading and wonder, Why are we listing all these places? Israel set out from here. They camped there. Then they set out again. It goes on for nearly the whole chapter. But they are standing on the edge of the promised land. Before they go forward, God tells Moses to write down where they have been.

God doesn’t say, “You made it. Forget the wilderness.” He has them remember it, stage by stage. Some of those places would have brought back incredible memories. They came out of Egypt. They passed through the sea. God provided water when they needed it. But other names would have been hard to hear. There were places where they were afraid, places where they complained, and places where people died. Still, God told Moses to write them down.

I think we all have places like that in our story. You may not remember every date, but you remember the phone call. You remember the hospital room. You remember the season when you were trying to lead your family while privately wondering how you were going to make it through. I know there have been moments in my life when all I could do was get through what was right in front of me. I wasn’t thinking about what God might teach me someday. I was just asking him to help me make it through that day.

And I want to be careful here. Looking back does not mean we have to call every painful thing good. Some things were heartbreaking. Some things still hurt. We don’t honor God by pretending otherwise. But when I look back, I can also see that he did not leave me there. I can see people he sent at the right time. I can see strength I didn’t know I had because he gave it to me. I can see ways he changed how I love and care for other people.

That is part of what Israel needed to remember. They were about to face a new challenge, and the same God who brought them out of Egypt had been with them at every stop along the way. Maybe that is what you need to hear today. The situation in front of you may be new. It may even be intimidating. But God has not suddenly become faithful today. He has been faithful all along.

There is another part of this chapter we shouldn’t skip. After God has Israel remember the road behind them, he tells them what to do when they enter the land. They must tear down the idols there. They cannot carry their old patterns into the place he is leading them. So there are two questions for us today: What do I need to remember? And what do I need to leave behind?

Remember where God met you. Remember how he provided. Remember the people who helped carry you when you could not carry yourself. But also ask whether there is something from the last season you are still holding on to: an old fear, a habit of trying to control everything, or a way of thinking that keeps you from trusting God now. You can be grateful for how far God has brought you and still have a step of obedience to take today.

Before you move on with your morning, think back over the road. Name one place where God carried you. Thank him for it. Then ask him to show you the next step.

Prayer

God, thank you for being with me through every stage of the journey. Help me remember your faithfulness without pretending the hard places were easy. Show me what I need to leave behind, and give me courage to follow you into what comes next. Amen.
