When God Has Already Spoken a Blessing
Numbers 23:19 ESV
"God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?"
Numbers 23 is one of the most encouraging chapters in the wilderness journey because it reminds us that God's promises are not determined by our circumstances or by the opinions of other people. Balak had hired Balaam to curse Israel, believing that if the right words were spoken over God's people, their future could be changed.
But there was one problem.
God had already spoken.
Every time Balaam opened his mouth to pronounce a curse, God filled it with blessing instead. Balak became increasingly frustrated, moving Balaam from one location to another, hoping that a different viewpoint might somehow produce a different outcome. Yet no matter where they stood, God's message remained the same.
What God had blessed could not be cursed.
That truth extends far beyond Israel's story.
There are moments in life when it feels as though every voice around us is filled with discouragement. We hear criticism. We replay past failures. We wrestle with insecurity. We wonder whether we have missed God's plan or whether our mistakes have somehow canceled His purposes for our lives.
Numbers 23 reminds us that the loudest voice in our lives should always be God's voice.
The opinions of others may be powerful, but they are never final. Our emotions may fluctuate from one day to the next, but God's character never changes. Circumstances may shift unexpectedly, but His promises remain secure.
One verse in particular has brought encouragement to countless believers through the years: "God is not man, that he should lie."
People change.
Promises get broken.
Plans fall apart.
Even the most trustworthy people occasionally disappoint us.
God never does.
He does not wake up tomorrow with a different plan. He does not discover new information that causes Him to rethink His promises. He is completely faithful to every word He has spoken.
That does not mean life will always unfold according to our timeline. Israel still had wilderness days ahead of them. They would face battles, disappointments, and seasons of waiting. Yet underneath every circumstance was the unchanging reality that God's covenant had not changed.
I think one of the greatest battles we fight is choosing which voice we will believe. Every day we are surrounded by messages telling us who we are, what we should pursue, and where we should place our hope. Some of those voices come from the culture around us. Others come from people we know. Still others come from our own inner critic.
The enemy has always been called the accuser.
Jesus has always been called the Savior.
One speaks condemnation.
The other speaks redemption.
One reminds us of our failures.
The other reminds us of His grace.
That is why it is so important to spend time in God's Word. The more familiar we become with His voice, the easier it becomes to recognize every other voice that tries to compete with it.
Numbers 23 ultimately points us to Jesus.
Every promise of God finds its "Yes" in Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus secured every blessing that God had promised to His people. Because we belong to Him, our standing before God is no longer determined by our performance but by Christ's perfect righteousness.
That does not mean we will never face hardship. It means hardship can never separate us from the love of God.
As I read Numbers 23, I am reminded that God's promises deserve greater authority in my life than my fears. Feelings come and go. Circumstances change. People's opinions rise and fall. But God's Word remains unchanged.
So today, consider which voice has been shaping your thinking lately. Have you been listening more to fear than to faith? More to criticism than to truth? More to your failures than to God's forgiveness? Take time to open His Word and remember what He has already spoken over those who belong to Christ. His promises have not changed, and neither has His love for you.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your Word never fails and Your promises never change. Forgive us for the times we have allowed fear, insecurity, or the opinions of others to become louder than Your truth. Help us build our lives on what You have spoken rather than on what we happen to feel. Thank You for Jesus, through whom every promise finds its fulfillment. Give us confidence to trust Your faithfulness, knowing that what You have begun, You will faithfully complete. In Jesus' name, amen.
